I am running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04. Kernel 2.6.20-14-generic. Adding the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base fixed the problem for me: # Ubuntu bug #89036, fix high pitched squeal from one channel # on M2N-MX nVidia MCP61 board options snd-hda-intel model=3stack As you can see in the comment above, this is a documented bug.
