running pppoe on the Live CD, and found that it isn't
available in the Live CD. (Is this what I was supposed

PPPoE is very much present in *buntu. In the terminal, simply type ppp
and tab it once or twice. You will get all the installed commands. Run
pppoeconf and your net will be up and running in live too. :)
