Does the CD (downloadable / shipit) come with proprietary applications? I guess not. So, the distribution is still Free Software. Also, there's a restricted repository that distributes non-free applications. I _assume_ there are applications in Ubuntu Linux that still don't have the same features as that of their proprietary alternative (or interoperability). Skype for example.
