I have to say this -- clear the thought of Debian being a geeks-only
distro from your mind and give it a serious try. There is little
difference between Debian and Ubuntu once it is installed. Here's a
good comparison between the two (thanks to the getgnulinux.org

There's a little bit more to be invested in configuration (and almost
none of it requires rocket science) on installation but the end result
is a system that is much sleeker, faster and more stable overall.
