I think this is similar to adding a new grub menu entry: copy a
template from older entry and change a few bits. I tried out adding a
menu for KNetworkmanager thusly:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/share/applications # cat knetworkmanager.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Categories=System;SystemSetup
Type=Application
Name=Knetworkmanager
GenericName=To start Knetworkmanager
Exec=knetworkmanager

#X-SuSE-translate=true

I think it heps to take an existing .desktop file of a program from
the same menu where you want to insert a new entry.

Works for me in KDE (OpenSuse 10.2)
