I would recommend reading "The UNIX Programming Environment" by Brian W.
Kernighan and Robert Pike (Prentice Hall India) to get an understanding
of things *NIXish. It is thin yellow paperback which *really* packs a
solid punch.
I would advise you to seriously read all available documentation; both
online and offline. Wikipedia is a great place to start. You have to
realise that to understand things takes patience and efforts.
