I have a completely updated Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10). Recently there have
been some random problem. Sometimes when I try to boot there seems to be no
activity on the splash screen and after a while it takes me to the initramfs
prompt (Failure to mount root filesystem). But again sometimes it boots just
fine with no problems whatsoever.

I found that this was a bug. [1]
The only solution to get around this problem was to append "all_generic_ide"
to the root line in menu.lst. But I read in the bug report discussion that
it may hamper the performance of my HDDs (which are already slow). Is there
any other way to get around this problem?
