Promoting foss software IS the key to making things simpler for the 
man on the street. And there are certain fundamental things - mainly 
political - that prevent this.

You mean a distro, which is the operating system + ultilities + 
applcation

If you read the news you will have noticed that M$ was fined $1.34 
billion for not complying with a 4 year old court directive. The 
directive ordered M$ to disclose information so that other software 
could be compatible to M$ formats - the exact thing that you want.
so you are asking the wrong people to make compatible software.


And what is even funnier you pay M$ for keeping you trapped.

I too run a bussiness - Without M$ for . And without closed software.  
And everyone of the closed software that we used in that past without 
exception brought us grief. The sooner you switch the better.

Running a business and hence unable to switch is a lame excuse
