I don't quite know about the motives of GSoC, but there are ample
other opportunities for those who do not have experience. Money
earning opportunities, maybe not. But I feel they act as a better
first step than GSoC. GSoC may not always be the right place to start.
While the promise is great and money is good, the schedule may be
tighter than what most newcomers would be comfortable with.

There are many promising projects that are screaming for contributors.
Log on to Sourceforge, Savannah, etc. and take your pick. It's just
that there's no money involved for starters. But then on the brighter
side, you could be one of the guys who gets picked in the next GSoC
for the PLUSES right :)
