For those who fear unwanted spaces sneaking in-between the commands, GUI based file manager is preferred. This is one of the case where I suggest using a GUI tool while working on GNU/Linux platform. Konqueror, Nautilus etc. are good tools to remove selected files and directories from the file system. If Xwindow is not installed on the system, then mc can be used instead.
