Generally after an installation, the Linux desktop does not produce sound automatically. In the sound 'speaker' icon on the desktop, start the mixer and pull up all the volume controls especially PCM and Headphones. Then close the window and right click on the same speaker icon and click 'Select Master Channel'. This is either PCM or Headphones. This will dynamically control the volume level.
