Almost any recent cdwriter will work in linux. I think budget would be a deciding factor. And even if it is an ide cdwriter you will *have* to use it under scsi-emulation. It's all in the docs. I use the Samsung Combo dvd/cdrw. No hassles *except* that you cannot write multisession Cds if you are using kernel 2.4.x (and maybe 2.5.x).
