Been using Debian unstable since last October. For development it is The Distro. It has ports to most (all the ones that i know of) CPUs, which is vital for embedded stuff. It has a sane dependency & package managment policy. It has the largest number of packages. It is the esasiest to upgrade and maintain (particularly with a fat net connection.
Commercial distros try to create a "typical user" cd. A typicla developer environment is anything but typical. Further there will be no nasty suprises in the gcc or per seat licences or some other desperate manuover to stay alive. Debian has a life and world all it's own and will be around long after the commercial distros.
