KDevelop uses the GNU autotools framework for Makefiles. i.e. it uses automake/autoconf etc. just like any other open source s/w would use.
The only file that you need to create or edit is the Makefile.am file.. all other files are auto generated. So even if you see a 500 line Makefile, it is probably generated from a 10 line Makefile.am The advantage of using these Makefiles over your own is that these are designed to be poratable across numerous platforms. Your code can be made to compile on any OS, under any h/w. It takes some time to get used to the autotools framework, but once you get used to it, you'll never want to use anything else!!!
