Heres some insight for email: "The first email message was sent in late 1971 by a computer engineer named Ray Tomilson. While the exact message is not known, it is believed to be something like "QWERTYIOP". Ray Tomilson is also the person who picked up the "@" as the locator symbol in the email address.
