try this:

# If X not running --> use echo  --> else use xmessage
[ x"$DISPLAY" == "x" ] && ECHOBIN=echo || ECHOBIN=`which xmessage`
#... your rest of the script
# tell something to user
$ECHOBIN "Welcome to wonderful world of scripting!"
