It would be better if you first figure out what kind of cluster you want to build. Then try out some of the available clustering technologies like beowulf (from scyld.com) or openmosix (openmosix.org). You will get enough information to build clusters using either beowulf or openmosix on the sites.
Once you are comfortable with the technology, then you can try customizing to a particular platform like redhat 8.0. Beowulf does provide support for free. But openmosix definitely can be installed on top of redhat 8.0. Amitay. PS: the problems you are getting because the RPC portmapper is not started and you are trying to use yp/nis services.
