Even after resetting as above, things didn't work for me. But one unusual step *seems* to have solved the problem (at least at my end). What I did was add more virtual terminals on the console (/etc/inittab) and the issue is resolved. I no longer get garbled screen. Red Hat comes with default 6 VTs, I increased it to 10.
