Welcome to the world of kernel compilation!!

Even I had the same problem, and i posted to the list.

You need to install module-init-tools and then recompile the kernel.

There could be other packages you must upgrade, check out the
README/INSTALL files with the kernel.

I finally convinced myself to try out beta kernels. And I downloaded the
2.6 test version. But the problem now is that modules don't work. Is
there anything different that I have to do compared to the normal kernel
compilation procedure? My 2.4 kernel still works fine (compiled it from
source... so I guess I'm no a complete stranger to it.)

Thanx in advance,
Siddhesh

If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked
something.
