I presume that there is some problem with some graphic library 
(imlib?) which the image viewer software(s) is/are trying to use to 
display tiff images.

Check out imlib_config for options and also your X server display colors setting. See 
if it is set to million colors. One possibility is that its eating up memory in color 
replacements.
Another possibility being, using the stock kernels. I have faced really bad hdd 
trashing using stock RH kernels. They somehow eat up memory.
