 There is a whole lot you can do towards ensuring
optimal performance of your x86 machine.

 Ofcourse i will not launch into one of the RTFM
posts. But if your machine has a lower configuration
it would be wise to try out other lighter window
managers of the likes of....

 > windowmaker
 > icewm
 
 Gnome 2.2 seems to be quite resource hungry.
