hi there 
if ur using redhat go to the konsole in root usr mode and do a "netconfig" put in the 
details and do a "service network restart"(assuming u have been provided with all the 
details by ur isp and also that this isp uses tcp/ip protocol)that shud just do it and 
if its a pppoe protocol do a adsl-setup(again in su mode) and then just adsl-connect 
should just about do it.
for debian systems there is this netcardconfig command for tcp/ip. i dont know abt 
pppoe for debian
