What do you mean by data/file wise or intelligent?

AFAIK, rsync is not a backup tool per se. Its merely a utility that
syncs two directories, which may either both be local, or remote or
combination. A lot of backup management systems use rsync to do the
actual data transfers.

If you need to backup so many systems, consider using a proper backup
management system. We prefer AMANDA in our dept, because that suites
our needs the best. There's a Backup-HOWTO out there ... that should
be a good starting point.
