Yeah it works I have tried that as well :) Just be sure that you cover the HDD
well before you put it in the freezer :)

The release notes of e2fsprogs say that ext3 fs is supported for quite
a few operations
including replaying journal in user mode and identifing/reading
superblocks on disk.
but YMMV.
