Just  splitting the cd wont help. U will also require to maintain the
packages in the right order if you wanna use a cd install. So you will
have to get the packages.gz file for each cd and copy only those
packages from the dvd to a partition, then use dpkg - scan package
to create the new packages.gz file, then burn the lot to cd.
Quite a pain. I dont know of a simple method.  Of course a perl or
bash script could automate the whole process. But i find dvd to be
better by far.

Hence, my simple answer ;)
