i did this long ago - not storing the whole mail, just piped each mail to a perl script which wrote relevant details into a mysql database and piped it back to sendmail. Main use of this was, accounting (i was running a mailserver and charging for each mail according to size) and elimination of duplicate mails (in the days when downloads got cut resulting in multiple copies of the same mail).
