I'm using win32codecs and real player on my Gentoo amd64 box. I just had to use mplayer-bin compiled on a 32 bit platform instead of compiling a 64 bit mplayer.

The Gentoo AMD64 documentation has a nice HOWTO for creating a 32 bit chrooted environment on an amd64 machine. Inside this, one can use any applications that are 32 bit only. Though I haven't tried applying this to any other distro.
