Yeah! I have been using the IBM R40E modem successfully on a 2.4.18 Kernel with slmodemd (http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=en&q=slmodemd&btnG=Google+Search&meta=) I dont remember the version number. But it did work well enough. If you need more info I could look into the version number, etc and let you know.
