Most likely some network issue. Can you try upgrading to firefox 3?
Can you try connecting your machine to your friend's internet
connection and check if its working? If so then your internet
connection is to be blamed. I dont think your modem could be the
culprit but then again if some sort of filtering is enabled on your
modem then it could be an issue.
