Live CD is always slow, esp. if the cd drive does not have dma. > 2. Not installed correctly. Sarge, Etch, Lenny all work like a charm with via C3 (eqiv to a celeron 800Mhz) with 256MB and an 8GB pendrive, 4Gb of which is free. And it runs KDE.
