Hi,

The MAC address is unique for each Network device. The one embedded in your
laptop is therefore also unique. That is the reason police is asking for it.
Using the MAC address, they can find the location if someone uses your
laptop to connect to the internet.

It is generally listed at the back of the laptop, but as you have lost the
laptop the number is lost too.

You can contact your laptop company and if you have the serial number of the
laptop, they may be able to help you get the MAC address as they might be
having records of the same. Your serial number may be available on the
purchase invoice provided to you by your dealer, if not you can look for the
same on the box that the laptop was shipped in.

Hope you are able to recover the laptop soon. Also hope all members make an
immediate note of their own MAC addresses to counter such a situation in
future.
