Pratik, Best way forward is to get hold one of the MIPS / ARM board and download debians cross compilation kit ( as far as I know on Debian the kernel has been Ported on all possible processor platforms) once you head this path you shall have lot of discoveries which shall help you find the right path moving forward.
This offcorse is the free / OpenSource style of software development, other path is offcourse the proprietor development tool kit from various vendors (this shall reduce your pain on the path but well offcorse at a cost of buying their cross compiling tool chain) I would suggest moving on to the android based hardware platform, let me know I you r interested on it.
