Always mention version no of the distro for relevant/focused responses.  
There is version 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x (latest 5.4).

In all of the above incarnations, CentOS has a decent LAMP stack that 
works pretty much out of the box.

Take the compilation route if you need the latest versions of the 
respective packages.

Also, you mention the machine is "remote" and I am assuming it is  
visible on the 'Net.  Therefore, ensure that you apply, at a minimum, 
all the security related updates from CentOS.
