Another way to check is if /etc/ppp has the chat scripts etc. and if the
kernel throws up errors when you try to run the dialer.  Seems this is OK in
your case.

This continues to be interesting.  If you get more information on the
hardware used, you could join the tabletroms site and start a thread for
your generic model.  Also check XDA, if you haven't yet.
