As a matter of simple procedure, can you check if the computer gets a
working connection to the internet through other means?  I used to have a
similar problem with Fedora earlier, where browsing to sites worked only
with IP addresses, although Ping usually worked from the command line.  Also
check if it is a routing issue, and if you have a default route set.

I don't think this has much to do with your modem or the chat scripts.
