I had tried circa 2009/2010 similar experience and did not get much lift from NComputing. You can build your own thin client (kind of) by installing a minimalist desktop on a 4GB pen drive and use it as boot disk with Atom based boards. 'remmina' is a versatile client that can connect to remote desktop servers (rdp, xdmcp, nx etc.). I have been using this kind of setup for about 2 years now and very happy with it.
