I agree with the sentiment in this and your other reply.  We don't
hack random options all over the code.

But, if the profile can be supported by adding non-invasive options,
then we should implement as much as we can.

The real problem of this patch is the approach.  Instead of adding
discrete options, it hacks its way in, ignoring the modular design
that we already have in place.
