Sorry, I think that was just reading too quickly on my part, I did not notice it was a TX timeout. I don't know how much you are able to experiment on this setup, but it sounds reminiscent of the problems that resulted in the "bufferbloat" work a few years back. A lot of that was maintained out of tree for a while, so depending on how new your kernel and distribution is it may or may not be incorporated already. This is pretty old, not sure how much still applies.
