Actually it is way worse than SW timestamping. WiFi has collisions. Many of them. Multicast frames have zero priority and are *not* re-transmitted when corrupted by collision. So the only way to do "regular" PTP (meaning without the FTM) is by setting up unicast between the WiFi clients and the AP.
