I'd like a distro that will run well on my hp z5440

Xandros ( www.xandros.com ) fulfills all these criteria. It's Debian based and updates are via the Xandros Networks icon... one click the "Start" buttin one click Xandros Networks and you're there. You can of course add whatever sources you like to gran updates from but the default is from Xandros themselves and works fine for me. One nice element is the menus option to install from DEB or RPM. If you choose RPM it just creates the DEB and hums away doing its' stuff.

It runs perfectly on my Compaq R3370EA with very minor tweaking to get the touchpad reliable, and a bit more work to get the Wifi (PCMCIA based) to work. If yours is built in you'll probably do fine.

As for non-techies, OK I am one. However I used Windows for 9 years (still forced to for some stuff) and if Xandros had bene known to me 2 years ago it would have been much easier. The GUI file manager is very Windows-like in its' display with drives down the one side, folders opening off them etc. No going to root then /mnt then opening the folder, which frankly has always seemed a very clunky uunsatisfactory way to work.

Anyway the Open Community Editon (OCE) is free for download. Only takes one CD and you can then download whatever else you want/need from the updates. Do be aware that it's not *all* free as in beer, for the simple reason someone had to be paid to do all the work :)

Kind regards,

Julian
