my screen was damaged even with the top closed. the switch turned off the backlight but left the image on and the dpms stuff scrambled the screen. thankfully the screen fixed itself after a few days (weird but true). I had to change modprobe to use NVreg_Mobile=3 to make it actually shut off the lcd.
