Just look around. A quick google search yeilds pages and pages with nothing particularly good to say about ATi and Linux support. http://www.google.com/search?q=ati+linux+support+nvidia&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official Check this page out as a for instance: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/07/30/197259&tid=152&tid=137&tid=106 or this one: http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/23/1848243&mode=thread I wish I could find it again, but I once saw an article which looked at ATi and nVidia support for Linux and there were quotes in it from people at ATi saying they basically didn't care that much about Linux. It wasn't a priority for them and they didn't devote much manpower to Linux driver development. nVidia on the other hand actively develops for Linux. Their latest driver release supports SLI, even. >From what I gather (I have not dealt with ATi cards because of their reputation), while you might get one to work in 32-bit Linux (after much work), 64-bit mode is *way* behind and will probably not work. This is all with 3D stuff. If you don't want 3D, then the free (open-source) driver may work just fine.
