Ok, that's better.  I had it on UMA only, with 32MB of system RAM.. Now I have 
it on UMA + Sideport, 256MB total, and it gives about twice the performance.  
Still pretty bad considering what the card is capable of, but at least 
acceptable.

$ glxgears
7740 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1547.873 FPS
7299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1459.590 FPS

$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
1099 frames in 5.0 seconds = 219.800 FPS
1270 frames in 5.0 seconds = 254.000 FPS
1247 frames in 5.0 seconds = 249.400 FPS
