I like that idea!  The only snag I can see aside from those you
mentioned, is that all technology, especially computers, tend to have
similar flaws or design faults in the same models.  Therefore unless a
user physically breaks something by accident, if parts just wear out,
you could end up with a pile of laptops all with the same fault.

Of course if that *did* happen in sufficient quantity, there could be
a case for approaching Compaq and pointing out the design flaw to get
the repairs done by them.
