Ditto. I have exactly the same experience with the latest Ubuntu Dapper-Drake. It sounds like Gnome is having the same problem as your latest KDE version
Played around with the configurations files for a while before finally switching to an external mouse and disabling the touchpad. Will be interested to find out what solutions are out there to be had.
