Well - before doing that, try rather and just run the CPU at a lower frequency. If you're running a modern distro, you should be able to scale your frequency speed. You can also look here: http://cpuspeedy.sourceforge.net/ for a simple command-line app that you can use to explicitly set your CPU frequency.
