I've done some  quick tests on Lion and at least it doesn't crash that 
early for me. Note that you should most probably use the latest snapshot 
build
(http://download.linuxsampler.org/packages/osx/snapshots/), not the old 
1.0.0 version.

You can use the nc command from the terminal:

nc localhost 8888
