Let me put it this way: 
Water plays a dominating role in covering the surface of the earth.
The use of the word dominating is neither aggressive nor is it tyrannical.
Nevertheless, it is a proper use of the word in English.
Chris, I apologize if I offended you.
I have a lot of respect for your opinion, and I really appreciate your input.
I remember all the times you helped me with my questions.
