I know there are a few LUGroupies that would find this meet-up very interesting.
http://sysadmin.meetup.com/41/ Meet with other local System Engineers and Admins to discuss large web infrastructure technologies like cloud computing, distributed processing, and file based databases. (e.g. Hadoop, EC2, S3, distributed hash tables, and P2P communication systems, data mining, knowledge discovery and large-scale analytical processing) Location Lost Souls Cafe 124 W 4th St Los Angeles, CA 90013 (213) 617-7006 Who’s coming? 8 Yes / 0 Maybe 7 spots left — RSVP deadline: September 9, 2008 8:00 PM Who's organizing? Matt Gray Hey Folks! Bring your laptops, your O'Reilley books, and the latest issue of Wired! This is the inaugral meeting - we expect a few of you guys to come, but all is welcome. Lost Souls Cafe is a good place (and a good metaphor) for us to start as we define the goals + objective of this little group. They got great coffee, and more importantly, free Wi-Fi - so you'll at least get that out of this meetup. Format for the meeting is as follows: 15 minutes, intros. You can share as much or as little about you - why are you here? 15 minutes, Demo of Amazon EC2 + S3 - a practical application of how it works. 15 minutes Demo of Hadoop, HDFS, MapReduce - a simple word-count application (free code) and show how you can leverage many commodity boxes to solve complex tasks by "reducing" it to smaller ones. 15 minutes, brainstorm what we want to do at the next meeting! (Any suggestions?) We'll try to wrap all the good stuff within an hour, after that, you can stick around to discuss all the "offline" topics and get acquainted and share your ideas for the group. We hope to form a quality-over-quantity group that can meet regularly to exchange ideas, swap tricks (and code?), and wage the obligatory format wars. See you there.
