i've already ruled out Splunk. Looking at OpenNMS now and will look

groundwork next.
I wouldn't rule out Splunk, particularly when coupled with Nagios to
check for certain syslog events across your network.
It's expensive. As well as overkill for the need. It also appears to
have the highest learning curve /per feature.
